Germany and the Ivory Coast clash in their second World Cup fixture, both riding the momentum of opening-match victories.
While the Germans comfortably dismantled Curaçao, this encounter presents a much stiffer test—though my Germany vs. Ivory Coast predictions still favor Germany to cover the spread.
Read on for my World Cup picks for Saturday, June 20, with kickoff at 4:00 p.m. ET on FOX.
Who will win Germany vs Ivory Coast: Germany -1.5 (+146)
I was hugely impressed by Germany last time out. They beat a poor Curacao team, but it was how they did it that stood. The way in which their fullbacks Joshua Kimmich and Nathaniel Brown were used to overload the flanks is something that can be replicated here. The two combined for three goals and an assist in that game and will get into dangerous positions here. Kimmich has incredible delivery and can feed Germany’s attackers all game long.
Germany are missing a great traditional striker, but they make up for that with an attacking group that are interchangeable and can switch positions. The understanding of space and the ability to create pockets for other players to run into is what should help Germany cover the spread here.
I had doubts over the center of midfield before the tournament, but the duo of Felix Nmecha and Aleksandar Pavlovic was good, with Nmecha contributing to attacks. There’s not much value in a Germany moneyline win at -182, so I’m attacking the spread instead.
TOp pick
Germany vs Ivory Coast Over/Under pick: Over 2.5 (-154)
I’m more confident with the Over 2.5, than the spread. Germany racked up a staggering 26 shots in their opening game and should do their bit to help us reach that target here. With the movement of their attackers, we can see the Ivory Coast defenders pulled out of position. Ecuador didn’t score against the Ivory Coast, but they caused them issues, and with Germany’s quality, those mistakes will be punished.
The Germans conceded one to Curacao, but we don’t know exactly how good they are defensively, and Saturday’s opposition will pose a sterner test, particularly Yan Diomande, who lit up that 1-0 win. He was sensational, using his speed and directness to devastating effect. He could be a difference maker, and with him playing in the Bundesliga, he should be familiar with the German defense.
It wouldn’t be a shock to see the Africans score, but the question is how many Germany will put past them.
Germany vs Ivory Coast goal scorer pick: Jamal Musiala (+208)
Kai Havertz scored twice against Curacao, but Jamal Musiala really caught the eye. His movement is a nightmare to defend, especially when he moves between the flanks and the hole in behind the striker.
That reading of space, combined with his quick feet, makes him adept with both left and right, allowing him to beat a man and free up enough room to take a shot.
He had three shots in his previous game and is the central threat here. He’s averaged just shy of a goal every four games since debuting for Germany and is their best player.
