Switzerland might be the group winners generating the least buzz at this World Cup, but they’re slight -103 favorites to edge out Algeria in Thursday’s Round of 16 battle.

The Swiss rebounded impressively from a shock draw with Qatar in their Group B opener, and my Switzerland vs. Algeria predictions expect Murat Yakin’s men to outlast the Desert Warriors in Vancouver.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Switzerland vs Algeria: Switzerland (-103)

Switzerland has successfully reached the Round of 16 at the last three World Cups, and their disciplined game plan sparked back-to-back victories to top Group B in the World Cup odds.

Murat Yakin’s men are unbeaten in their past five games, so it’s an uphill task ahead for Algeria on Thursday, especially after some shaky defensive moments from the Desert Warriors during the group stage. The Swiss boast the edge in talent and experience, and I’d bet their moneyline up to -140.

This current Switzerland team is shaking off a reputation for lacking a killer instinct in the final third, and they can unleash in-form duo Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi to support lone striker Breel Embolo, who enables this team to play a more direct style.

Then there’s the Algeria defense, which conceded seven goals during the group stage and is under real pressure to correct those lapses.

Don’t sleep on the rest factor, either. Switzerland wrapped up their group fixtures last Wednesday, while Algeria played as recently as Saturday night in the World Cup bracket.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Dating back to last November, Switzerland have now won six of their last nine competitive games, drawing the other three contests.

Switzerland vs Algeria Over/Under pick: Under 2.5 (-143)

It would be easy to lean into Algeria’s defensive lapses and Switzerland’s average xG of 2.39 in the group stage, but I’m expecting a cagier contest as the knockout tension kicks in.

This ever-improving Swiss team hasn’t conceded more than one goal in any of the last five contests, while the Algerians entered this World Cup on the heels of four straight clean sheets. And if chances come at a premium, I trust Switzerland to be more ruthless with theirs, particularly with captain Granit Xhaka pulling the strings.

Plus, we’ve seen this story before from Algeria against stronger opposition. They managed just one shot on target against Argentina in Group J play and were also held scoreless in their Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal defeat to Nigeria in January.

There’s a heavy reliance on veteran Riyad Mahrez to unpick defenses, but the Desert Warriors won’t get any gifts from a Swiss back four led by Manuel Akanji.
