No Betting Allowed at 2027 NFL Draft in Washington, DC

The 2027 NFL Draft will be held on federal land, where gambling is prohibited.

The National Football League promises a grand spectacle when the NFL Draft unfurls on the National Mall in Washington, DC, from April 29-May 1, 2027. The Washington Monument and The Capitol will help provide it, offering a rousing backdrop for revelers that will come from all corners of the country.

Sports bettors might be advised to watch from their living rooms, or a DC bar, or, if they hope to  make a wager, from a piece of non-federal land within sprinting distance.

Since betting is illegal on federal enclaves – in a district where 29% of it qualifies, from massive expanses like The Mall to tiny oblong parcels of grass wedged between converging streets – putting down a bet on the Commanders’ pick won’t be easy in real time. Constitution and Independence Avenues technically count as bet-friendly zones, according to a DC entertainment sports gambling restriction zone map. But even as precise as GeoComply’s geo-fencing technology is, DC is a challenge, both for operators and frustrated bettors near federal property. And it’s not wise to cross a D.C. street staring at a phone struggling to verify a location.

The “Draft Theater” will be placed in front of the Capitol on the Mall, according to an NFL release on Thursday.

“The NFL Draft continues to grow as one of our biggest and most accessible events, and we are excited to welcome fans and prospects to Washington, DC, in 2027,” Peter O’Reilly, NFL executive vice president of club business, international and global events, said in the statement. “Our nation’s capital will provide an incredible, iconically American stage to host fans from around the world, as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”

FanDuel, the official sportsbook of the DC Lottery, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, theScoreBet, and Fanatics offer mobile sports betting in DC, off federal land and outside two-block exclusivity zones of sports arenas.

Local Will Know the Deal, Tourists Will Soon

Sports bettors of legal age from the “DMV” of the District, Maryland, and Virginia are almost certain to know about the restrictions (Maryland has draft betting, too, but Virginia doesn’t allow it in any form). But tourists of a mind to speculate on whose career the Browns are about to ruin are likely to be confused and frustrated about their unsuccessful attempts to bet.

Las Vegas (2022), Detroit (2024) and Pittsburgh (2006) are the only cities where betting was legal in their states when they hosted the draft. The 2026 event in Pittsburgh set an attendance record of more than 805,000 over three days this past spring.

Perhaps next year’s attendees won’t be so concerned about betting for a few days. Or maybe they’ll lean on prediction markets to get their draft action down.
