Lionel Messi promoted Kalshi’s World Cup campaign in a paid Instagram post, giving the prediction market operator unprecedented exposure as it expands through a sponsorship agreement with the Argentina Football Association.
Lionel Messi featured in a paid promotional campaign for Kalshi tied to the company’s sponsorship agreement with the Argentina Football Association (AFA), giving the prediction market operator one of its highest-profile marketing moments to date.
The campaign launched on Sunday through a paid post on Messi’s Instagram account, which has more than 500 million followers. The post featured Messi alongside Argentina teammates Nicolas Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul, promoting a Kalshi-branded giveaway.
AFA Deal Brings Marketing and Data Benefits
The activation followed Kalshi’s June 10 announcement that it had become an official sponsor of the AFA for the duration of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The creative also highlighted Kalshi’s market on whether Argentina will repeat as World Cup champions. It displayed an implied probability of 8.9% for the defending champions.
Kalshi gains co-branded activations through the deal, along with joint social campaigns and the right to use the federation’s intellectual property, including its crest, in marketing materials.
The deal also includes a data-sharing component. Genius Sports, the AFA’s official data and streaming partner, will provide official match data to Kalshi to support the creation and settlement of sports-event contracts.
Kalshi will also participate in Genius Sports’ integrity information-sharing processes, a measure intended to provide sports leagues with greater visibility into related market activity.
The announcement came shortly before Argentina begins its defense of the World Cup title it won in 2022 in Qatar. Argentina plays Algeria in Kansas City on Tuesday in Group J.
Messi remains one of the most followed footballers in the world and has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards. His involvement gives Kalshi access to one of the most recognizable athletes in global sports as the company expands its World Cup presence.
A Growing Sports Marketing Push
The Messi campaign is the latest step in Kalshi’s broader effort to expand its presence through high-profile athletes and sports personalities.
The company signed two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in February and golfer Bryson DeChambeau in January.
Earlier this month, football manager José Mourinho also appeared in a paid social media campaign for Kalshi ahead of the World Cup. The post generated more than 137,000 likes on Instagram and carried the slogan: “Some people watch the game. Some see what’s next.”
Messi’s post reached a significantly larger audience. It generated more than 1.4 million likes within days while promoting Kalshi’s Argentina World Cup market and an AFA jersey giveaway.
The World Cup presents a big betting opportunity, with Macquarie expecting it to become the largest betting event in history. Macquarie estimates that over $50 billion could be wagered on the 2026 tournament.
While the forecast primarily relates to traditional sportsbooks, prediction markets have also emerged as a significant part of the tournament wagering ecosystem. Kalshi reported a record $5.1 billion in notional trading volume during the opening week of the World Cup. That marked the largest week in the company’s history.
The Legal Cloud
Despite the commercial momentum, prediction markets continue to face legal and regulatory challenges in multiple jurisdictions. Several U.S. states continue to argue that sports-event contracts fall within their authority to regulate gambling activity despite Kalshi’s status as a federally regulated exchange.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz signed the country’s first outright ban on prediction markets in May. Meanwhile, the CFTC has moved to block enforcement in several states, including Arizona, Minnesota, New York, Illinois, and Connecticut.
Industry observers believe that the matter will eventually reach the Supreme Court.
The AFA and Messi deal comes despite recent regulatory scrutiny of prediction markets in Argentina. In March, a Buenos Aires court ordered the blocking of Polymarket in the country.
The partnership represents one of Kalshi’s most prominent commercial agreements to date. It comes as prediction markets seek to capitalize on what analysts expect to be the largest betting event in history.
